Contrasting Indonesian consumers’ high trust levels in RTP systems amid escalating scam incidents

A 14-country survey of the real-time payment systems landscape has merited the special mention of Indonesia.

Based on a survey commissioned in 2024 of 1,001 Indonesian adults* to explore their experiences regarding their experiences with real-time payment (RTP} services, scams, and their banks’ scam prevention capabilities, a credit scoring data analytics firm has disclosed some findings specific to the country.

First, 93% of respondents had indicated that they trusted the security of RTP services in the country. The global average of trust levels of 11,000 respondents from 13 other countries was 73%.

Second, 23% of respondents had reported losing money to scams via RTP, involving transactions such as paying for goods, services, or investments that were never delivered.

Other findings

Third, 66% of respondents had reported having been exposed o messages from scammers, and 57% had indicated that their friends or family members had also been received such attempted scam messages. Also:

  • 99% of respondents indicated having sent funds via RTP, and 97% indicated having received funds via RTP services. Note that RTP services are said to be “continuing to gain traction” in Indonesia, a reminder that the technology implementation is not yet mature compared to those of the other countries surveyed
  • 59% of respondents indicated expectations to increase RTP usage in the next 12 months, compare to the global average of other respondents of 44%
  • 70% indicated they would view their bank more positively if any attempted scam was intervened in real time to prevent a payment to scammers
  • 23% of respondents reported losing money to scammers n 2024, compared to 19% in similar data from 2023
  • The share of high-value scam losses exceeding Rp70m (US$4,300) was 8% in 2024 data

According to Dattu Kompella, Managing Director (Asia), FICO, the firm that commissioned the international surveys: “As (RTP) adoption increases, so does the risk of scams exploiting the speed and irrevocability of RTP. Banks are in a prime position to lead the fight, by educating consumers, clearly communicating risks, and deploying advanced scam detection tools to safeguard trust in the RTP ecosystem.”

*among 11,000 respondents for a total of 14 countries
