Bali event poll records banking executives’ responses on prepayment scam detection

Bali event poll records banking executives’ responses on prepayment scam detection

Responses from 51 senior executives indicate their bank’s concerns and preferences about cybersecurity, AI risks and fraud management

Based on an August 2026 poll of 51 banking executives at a Bali forum on scam prevention, an analytics software firm has shared findings on prepayment detection, intervention preferences and perceived threats with the media.

First, 49% of respondents had selected “not very confident” and 2% had selected “not confident at all” regarding their bank’s ability to detect customer manipulation before a payment. Another 46% had selected “somewhat confident” while 2% had selected “very confident”.

Second, 77% of the respondents had indicated a preference for immediate intervention when behavioral warning signs indicated significant scam risk. Another 10% had indicated their choice to warn customers while generally leaving the decision to them; 5% had selected waiting for strong evidence of a scam; and 8% had selected intervening once a suspicious transaction was attempted. These were preferences, not records of how banks operated.

Other findings

Third, 54% of the small pool of respondents had selected — i) improved behavioral analytics, and ii) fraud-related information brought together from multiple data sources or organizations and made available for analysis or response — as the most important capability for detecting changes in customer behavior and improving scam prevention. Also:

  • 39% cited slow intelligence sharing among banks, telecommunications providers and social media platforms as a major weakness in scam prevention. The figure reflected a selected concern, not measured information-sharing failures.
  • 46% selected AI-generated personalized scam messages and conversations as the emerging threat that concerned them most over the next three years. The question addressed anticipated concern, not the observed frequency of those scams.
  • 28% selected criminal “scam-as-a-service” platforms; 10% selected organized mule-account networks; 8% selected deepfake impersonation; and 8% selected attacks on biometric authentication.
  • 75% selected fraud and scam prevention as a priority for AI or “agentic decisioning”. The press release did not define the latter term or indicate whether respondents could select multiple priorities.
  • 47% cited data and infrastructure, while 43% cited legacy systems and integration, as barriers to scaling AI-driven decisioning.

The poll was conducted by FICO during its Banking Leaders Forum. Its release described participants as senior executives and C-suite leaders from Asia Pacific banks, but provided no country breakdown, recruitment method, response rate, questionnaire or full results. No standalone survey report was located. Dattu Kompella, the firm’s Asia Pacific managing director, proposed examining changes in payment behavior and beneficiary setup before transfers; the release provided no data showing that the polled banks had tested that approach.

Editor’s note: The results describe attendees’ responses, not verified bank capabilities or the views of Asia Pacific banks generally.
