In a perimeter-less world, identity is the foundation of security

In a perimeter-less world, identity is the foundation of security

Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS): RaaS has lowered the entry point into the cybercrime underworld, enabling cybercriminals with minimal technical skills to launch ransomware attacks by purchasing or

leasing ransomware tools and infrastructure. This model has significantly increased the volume of attacks, with 74% of organizations being victimized by ransomware in the last 12 months.

Advanced evasion techniques: Ransomware developers have become increasingly adept at evading traditional security defences. Many ransomware strains now employ advanced techniques such as fileless malware, which operates directly in system memory without leaving traces, making it harder to detect. This shift has forced businesses to adopt more advanced cybersecurity measures, including deploying a robust backup and recovery plan and regularly scheduling tabletop exercises during peacetime.

How is artificial intelligence being used in both cyberattacks and cybersecurity defence?

EW: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game-changer in both cyberattacks and cybersecurity defense, with its capabilities being leveraged to enhance both offensive and defensive strategies.

On the offensive front, cybercriminals are using AI to enhance the sophistication of their attacks. Machine learning algorithms, for example, automate the creation of highly convincing phishing emails that are harder to detect. AI is also frequently used to deploy malware, which adapts and evolves to bypass many traditional security systems. AI also assists in automated vulnerability scanning, enabling attackers to quickly identify weak links in a system. By the same token, defenders are also using AI to carry out offensive operations against nation-state sponsored threat groups.

On the defense front, AI is playing a critical role in enhancing cybersecurity. It is used for threat detection and response by analysing vast amounts of data to identify suspicious activity patterns in real time. Additionally, AI enables predictive analysis, allowing organizations to foresee potential threats before they magnify.

As AI continues to evolve, its dual influence in both fuelling cyberattacks and strengthening cybersecurity presents a complex challenge. While cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging AI for more sophisticated and automated attacks, businesses and security experts are using the same technology to stay ahead of threats and better protect their data and systems.

The growing reliance on AI underscores the importance of adopting advanced, AI-driven cybersecurity solutions to defend against the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats. With the progression of this technology, the impact on the cybersecurity industry will only deepen, highlighting the need for continuous innovation and vigilance.
