Thai government expands secure email management to close cybersecurity gaps

Thai government expands secure email management to close cybersecurity gaps

New measures address cybersecurity gaps in public sector communications, deploying advanced protections and operational support across multiple government agencies.

In order to strengthen its digital infrastructure, particularly in the realm of secure communications, the government of Thailand has taken significant steps to ensure that all its agencies will fully adopt digital systems by 2026.

The need for robust cybersecurity has become increasingly urgent in light of rising cyber threats and the country’s rapid digital transformation. On 14 July 2025, the Thai government announced the expansion of its secure email platform, now supporting over 16,500 accounts across agencies such as the State Audit Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Provincial Waterworks Authority.

Despite the country’s recent leap to seventh place in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index, Thailand faces challenges around operational readiness. Only a small percentage of organizations are considered “mature” in their cybersecurity posture, with most still working to develop the necessary systems and capabilities to counter evolving threats.

The government’s previous reliance on fragmented, less secure email systems had left sensitive data vulnerable to interception, unauthorized access, and operational disruptions. To address these issues, the government’s announcement describes a comprehensive digital transformation of its email infrastructure. Key technical solutions implemented include:

  • Encrypted email communications and secure mailbox deployment
  • Multi-factor authentication for user access
  • Cloud-based infrastructure with local data residency
  • Automated backup and disaster recovery systems
  • 24/7 technical support and incident response
  • Centralized user management and compliance with government security standards

Their spokesperson, Sorachat Chaithanee, Chief Technology Officer, ServerToday, the IT service provider involved, commented: “Our work with government agencies has helped them gain better control over their communications and … peace of mind knowing their data is secure.”

According to Marcus Teo, Chief Revenue Officer, Zimbra, a commercial software platform involved in the project: “As institutions face increasing pressure to modernize while staying secure, our partnership ensures they have access to solutions that are … locally grounded and globally trusted.”
