Fresh reporting from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal this week puts a spotlight on the central tension in quantum computing: the same technology poised to transform drug discovery, materials science and AI could also break the cryptographic systems that protect global communications.
Compounding the urgency is that the “harvest now, decrypt later” strategy is already being readied by malicious forces — even though no cryptographically relevant quantum computer is known to exist.
The global response to this threat is being led by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which had finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards — FIPS 203 (ML-KEM), FIPS 204 (ML-DSA), and FIPS 205 (SLH-DSA) — in August 2024, and is encouraging system administrators to begin migrating immediately. A draft transition roadmap, NIST IR 8547, proposes deprecating 112-bit classical key-establishment schemes after 2030 and disallowing all quantum-vulnerable algorithms after 2035, aligning with National Security Memorandum 10’s deadline for federal systems.
In July 2026, a separate development rattled the community: AI firm Anthropic disclosed that it used an AI model to find a vulnerability in HAWK, a candidate digital-signature algorithm under NIST evaluation. HAWK’s developers withdrew it from consideration, though NIST stressed that its finalized standards remain unaffected.
As Bloomberg’s feature details, the quantum industry itself remains in an early, uncertain phase. The WSJ narrates a more operational story: the threat is real and approaching; migration is already happening in major sectors; and organizations should start moving now under clear standards and deadlines. The message from both outlets reinforces a consensus among cybersecurity leaders: the time to act is now, not when the threat materializes.
Federal agencies alone are expected to spend more than US$7bn on the transition to post-quantum cryptography, and private-sector organizations face mounting pressure to inventory their cryptographic assets and begin migration planning before the window closes.
