Operationalizing sustainability in cybersecurity: Group-IB’s approach

Operationalizing sustainability in cybersecurity: Group-IB’s approach

See how the firm turned malware-group takedowns into measurements of sustainability and resilience gains: by counting electrical and carbon-credit savings.

Can a cybersecurity company transform its operations — and even its industry — by rigorously measuring and managing not just digital threats, but also its impact on people, the planet, and society through transparent, data-driven accounting of sustainability practices?

Having faced significant challenges in combating the growing scale and complexity of cybercrime, a cybersecurity firm decided to take the bull by the horns.

Two-decade-old Group-IB has addressed these challenges by implementing a range of digital solutions and operational strategies to account for the progress of its sustainability drive:

  • Collaboration with international and local law enforcement agencies to dismantle over 207,000 compromised computers
  • Real-time threat detection and incident response capabilities
  • Deployment of effective digital forensics and cyber investigation technologies
  • Promotion of operational energy efficiency, including transitioning the Netherlands office to 100% renewable electricity
  • Development of inclusive workforce programs focused on training, diversity, and compliance with human rights and anti-corruption policies
  • Robust governance frameworks certified to ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 9001 standards, including continuous internal and external audits

These efforts have resulted in tangible outcomes:

  • the dismantling of cybercriminal networks leading to the arrest of 1,221 cybercriminals
  • the protection of approximately 65m potential fraud victims
  • the prevention of more than US$2.7bn in fraud losses
  • the shutting-down of compromised devices that prevented nearly 22.4m kWh of unnecessary electricity consumption, equivalent to avoiding roughly 10,000 tons of CO₂ emissions or the carbon capture capacity of 48,000 tree seedlings grown over a decade

On 16 July 2025, the firm’s CEO, Dmitry Volkov noted in a press release: “Our sustainability efforts now extend this mission to environmental and social governance, aligning with international goals to reduce carbon footprints and foster inclusive digital resilience.”

The firm’s environmental, sustainability and governance targets clarify how cybersecurity innovation pairs with real-world impact: cutting energy use, powering offices with renewables, enforcing ethical AI deployment, and cultivating diverse talent to strengthen global defenses.”
