Agentic AI emerge as enterprise insider threats predicted in 2026

Several industry observers warn enterprises of compromised autonomous agents in the year ahead.

According to some security leaders and new industry forecasts, AI agents are rapidly shifting from promising digital helpers to one of the most serious insider threats facing enterprises in 2026.

Experts warn that as both attackers and defenders race to automate operations, organizations may be handing over their most sensitive systems to compromised algorithms.

According to Wendi Whitmore, Chief Security Intelligence Officer, Palo Alto Networks, task‑specific AI agents embedded across business processes now resemble a powerful new class of insider. Security teams are under intense pressure to approve deployments faster than they can thoroughly vet them, and the firm predicts that these always‑on, privileged systems as “potent insider threats”.

In that vein, attackers will increasingly focus on compromising agents rather than humans. One of the sharpest risks highlighted by the firm is the rise of so‑called “CEO doppelganger” agents — automation built to review contracts, approve payments, or sign off on deals on behalf of senior executives. A single successful prompt injection or exploitation of a “tool misuse” flaw could give adversaries an “autonomous insider” able to silently authorize wire transfers, execute trades, delete backups, or exfiltrate customer data at scale.

Those concerns have been amplified by recent real‑world incidents in which threat actors used large language models to automate reconnaissance, vulnerability research, and exploit development. National cyber agencies such as the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre have cautioned that prompt‑injection style attacks may never be fully eliminated, only managed through layered technical controls and strong isolation of high‑risk tools.

Industrialized cybercrime with AI

Another industry player, Fortinet, has predicted in an NZ Herald report that 2026 will mark the “industrial age” of cybercrime, with purpose‑built autonomous agents taking over major phases of the attack lifecycle. These systems are expected to evolve beyond early underground tools like FraudGPT and WormGPT, automatically harvesting credentials, conducting phishing at scale, moving laterally inside networks, and packaging attacks for less‑skilled criminals. The firm stresses that velocity, not just sophistication, is becoming the defining metric: attackers can already compress the time from initial access to impact from days to hours, and AI will shorten that window further. Their analysts are calling for integrated security operations that link exposure management, endpoint and network detection, and automated response playbooks to contain AI‑driven campaigns before they can escalate.

On the defense side of the landscape, Zscaler CEO Jay Chaudhry has argued on startuphub.ai that organizations will need to enforce the Zero Trust model that treats every user, device, and now every agent as untrusted by default.

Without such guardrails, the experts agree, the same autonomous systems deployed to close skills gaps and boost productivity could become the most dangerous insiders on the network.
